Jazz emerged in the late 19th century in the United States and quickly became one of the most influential musical genres of its time. With its improvisational flair, jazz was a musical playground where musicians could create their own harmonies and explore new rhythms.

But jazz is more than just music. For African American musicians, jazz was a powerful tool of expression that conveyed their culture and identity, broke down racial barriers, and brought together musicians of different races and backgrounds.
